What our grantees say
What our grantees say
Manyfold
James Smith
A self-hosted, federated application for managing and sharing 3D-print files is a bit like running your own Thingiverse where the instances can talk to each other across the fediverse. It’s the kind of project the digital commons is built on: useful, opinionated, run by one person who cares deeply. Commons Caretakers helped him with debugging and testing.
Flock XR
Tracy Gardner
Finding the right expertise is hard when you’re a small open-source team. Dr Tracy Gardner, the computer scientist behind browser-based 3D creative coding tool Flock XR, needed UX design and software testing skills the team couldn’t cover internally. Through Commons Caretakers, she got both.
Qryptr
Thomas Schellekens
After eight years building an encrypted messenger on his own. The developer of Qryptr realised that the thing keeping him up wasn’t a bug or a soldering problem. It was a much quieter worry: did anyone else actually think this was worth doing? He came to Commons Caretakers for a UX audit of Qryptr.
Services and Support
Commons Caretakers offers specialised support services to improve the quality and maturity of free and open source projects, which are the building blocks of the commons. In-depth support activities not only make projects better, but subsequently allow efforts to scale and become self-sustainable as soon as possible. We can help with the following:
Software testing
Our highly seasoned experts will work with you on designing and developing test suites and integration pipelines and can offer guidance as needed.
UX testing
We can connect you to experienced UX researchers. They will focus on user research, usability testing and help you align it to best practices. Also, they will share suggestions for improvements, user flows or journey maps, and for user interface design.
Localisation/Internationalisation
Our service providers can help you assemble localisation systems and provide tailor-made advice on best practices for supporting (minority) languages.
Technical and standards writing
We have experienced people that can assist you with reviewing and drafting documentation, help with technical writing and contribute to standards such as RFC’s.
Standards and best practices
We can help you bring your system into conformance with industry standards and align you with best practices.
Technical mentoring, scaling and bug support
We have experts with the breadth and depth needed to provide customised technical mentoring, help dealing with scaling issues and support with mitigating technical issues and squashing pesky bugs.
Performance and energy efficiency
Measuring and improving performance and energy efficiency is something we can assist with as well, including assessing ecological impact.
Protocol verification
We can connect you to expert cryptographers who can perform symbolic protocol verification for your project.
Graphic design
We can support you with the development of a branding identity, of a logo and the many visual resources that will help make your project appealing for your target audiences.
Our Partners

NLnet is a philanthropic organisation with a proud history which goes back to 1982 when a group of Europeans led by former NLnet director and Internet Hall of Fame inductee Teus Hagen announced the European Unix Network (EUnet) — which became the first public wide area network in Europe and the place where internet was introduced to Europe. NLnet also pioneered the worlds first dial-in and ISDN infrastructure with full country coverage. In 1997 all commercial activities were sold to UUnet (now Verizon) and since that time the foundation dedicated itself to supporting the open internet, and strengthening the privacy and security of internet users. NLnet’s core business is to support independent organisations and people that contribute to an open information society, both financially and otherwise.

The Commons Conservancy is a unique umbrella organisation for FOSS projects. It aims to provide a lightweight organisational structure for open projects of many different kinds, through a reusable legal structure. Its mission is to strive towards a stable democratic and open global information society in which individuals can collectively scrutinise, reconfigure and improve upon any technology they depend on — unleashing and empowering human innovation at the widest possible scale, with the express intention to empower any individual to participate in all facets of social, cultural, economic and private life under conditions of his or her own choosing and with secure and reliable technology they can have full control over themselves.
